Q: Every New Year I set my mind to a healthier lifestyle. I start going to the gym and eating healthier, but my husband is completely unsupportive. He doesn’t like for me to work out or to go to the gym. How do I make him understand that I’m doing this for our family and to live a longer, happier life?
A: I applaud you on your decision to make a healthier lifestyle. While I am of the school of thought that husbands ought to be honored, I think that there may be something else that needs to be addressed besides your husband’s unsupportive behavior. The question I ask you is: How important is it to you to get healthy? I believe that the best way you can make your husband understand the healthier lifestyle that you are seeking for your family and your health is by simply living it out. Get him involved in your decision and adopt a healthy lifestyle as a team. He may not like you going to the gym, but perhaps he would enjoy a brisk walk in the park with you. This way you can encourage plus support eachother.
