Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo. Every year, more and more little girls are groomed into women

Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo. Every year, more and more little girls are groomed into women with an insatiable appetite for sky-high designer heels, unforgettable pumps, gem-adorned flats, funky flip flops, and jaw-dropping boots. In today’s world, teenage girls are more likely to know the names of designers worn on Carrie Bradshaw’s feet than names of former Presidents.

Shoe addiction has long been known as an enemy of pocketbooks everywhere, but more often than not, women tend to forget about the effects that our varying shoe choices can have our bodies. Joint pain, ankle injuries, and other unsettling side effects can occur based on whether we opt for our favorite pair of peep toes or ballet flats. SVL looked into the effects and found some surprising health results to keep in mind.

High Heels

While it’s no secret that extensive wear of high heels can have varying consequences for the stylish one who dons them, most women aren’t familiar with what those exact consequences are. According to MayoClinic, “wearing heels causes your foot to slide forward redistributing your weight, creating unnatural pressure points and throwing your body’s natural alignment out of whack.” The medical reference website also notes that “high heels have been linked to overworked or injured leg muscles, osteoarthritis of the knee and low back pain.” As tempting as the tallest skinniest heel might be, it may be beneficial to follow the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons’ rule of thumb: no more than three hours in three-inch heels.

Flip Flops

It’s nearly impossible to discuss our favorite types of shoes during the summer season without mentioning flip flops. The classic choice for locker rooms and public showers has made its way onto the fashion scene with glitter, gems, stones, varying colors and styles. While many would assume that this flat shoe is preferable to your everyday heel, they may be overlooking certain factors. According to the Washington Post, “The repeated process of lifting your heel away from the shoe surface (creating that characteristic flip-flop sound) creates tension in the foot . . . which can worsen such painful inflammatory conditions as plantar fasciitis.” So during the summer, it’s probably a good idea to alternate your favorite flip flops with sandals, sneakers, or other shoes that offer a little more support.

Uggs

The winter time sheepskin comfort-shoe can be commonly mistaken as a fashion-do because of perceived comfort (F.Y.I. It’s still a don’t). While the skeletal system is relieved from the pressures of heels, the looseness of Uggs causes feet to slip around inside, increasing pressure on the arches that transcends to the hip. Dr. Rock Positano, Director of the Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Service for the Hospital for Special Surgery, sees Uggs as detrimental to the health of wearers. Positano cautions, “We’re dealing with footwear that offers no substantial and necessary orthopedic support for the foot and the ankle.”

Nike Shox

For the active woman, sporting a pair of Nike Shox can actually become detrimental to high performance. The elevated running shoe can have adverse effects on range of motion and be a prime contributor to shin splints when worn over a long period of time. Health and wellness expert Abby Jorgensen warns that “constant elevation of the heel also leads to lack of external rotation of the hip which in turn is why so many females let their knees fall inward when they are in a squat, lunge, or deadlift exercise and puts them at risk for tearing their ACL during sports movements.” Instead, opt for shoes with a flat or minimal heel for when heading to the gym.

Pointed Toe Shoes

This ever-so-common choice for the office comes with its own warning label. Placed on the “cruel shoes list” by the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society, shoes with pointed toes can cause crowding of your toes and increased pressure on the forefoot. This makes the idea of “breaking in” a pair of pointy-toe heels suddenly seem a little less desirable.

Comfort Shoes
Everyone needs a few “comfortable shoes” to knock around in. Experts recommend wearing comfort brands such as Naturalizer, Ecco, Aerosole, Cole Hahn, or Crocs. While most of us prefer brands with a little more panache for a night out on the town, the key is to be smart and practice moderation when it comes to not-so-friendly shoe choices. Limit the amount of time you wear them, vary between different styles and always ensure that you have the right fit. If you are a true believer in the “Beauty is Pain” ideology, just remember to walk with caution because an ankle brace just isn’t sexy.

It’s summer—and it’s very hot, with temperatures reaching almost 110 degrees. One weekend, you tell yourself,

It’s summer—and it’s very hot, with temperatures reaching almost 110 degrees. One weekend, you tell yourself, “It’s time to go shopping!” On your list are few items you need in order to have a fabulous summer look, including that adorable dress you saw in your favorite store ad, plus designer shoes, jewelry and a few feminine
“must-haves.”

You arrive at the store and select what you need. You’re so excited to show your girlfriends your new acquisitions! The cashier tells you the grand total, and, with a secure smile on your face, you hand her your VISA. She swipes your overextended credit card. You’re ready to sign, but to your surprise the cashier exclaims, “I’m sorry, but your card has
been declined.”

DECLINED…DECLINED. Those are the last words you hear, and you feel like the world has fallen on your shoulders. The surprise and embarrassment guide you to the exit door empty-handed.

Thousands of women and men face circumstances like this every day. The overuse of credit cards has a hidden cost that doesn’t become apparent until you realize the amount of debt you’ve accumulated.

According to the Nilson Report, there were 576.4 million credit cards in circulation in the U.S. as of year end 2009. The average number of credit cards held by cardholders that year is more than three.

Credit card debt is increasing and because of this, people have started making changes in the way they live in order to begin paying them off. Some women have begun setting money aside from their paychecks to pay down what they owe on their credit cards. Others realized they don’t need to buy a pair of shoes every week—and when they do need to make a purchase, they pay cash instead of adding to their debt.

To pay off the arrears, most credit card companies require a modest payment towards the card balance. Most companies consider this to be between$10 and $20 a month. At this rate, paying off a $7000 debt will take 29 years.

These figures may frustrate you, but there is hope. There are several techniques that can help you become debt-free. Most don’t require you to take out an extra loan, endure invasive credit checks, or hire a specialist to do it for you.

One of them is known as the “snowball method.” This approach reccomends that when you pay off one debt you apply that payment amount to the next debt. In this way, the amount you pay on a debt grows like a snowball rolling down a hill.

The article Crushing Credit Card Debt, by David Berkey, explains how this technique works. One example illustrates it this way: Say you have three credit cards with debts of $5,000, $4,000, and $3,000, for which you are being charging you 18%, 27%, and 12%, respectively, and you are paying $150, $125 and $100 each month. By paying these required monthly amounts you will pay off your $3,000 credit card first.

Now that the $3,000 card is paid off, you’ll have an extra $100 a month. Put that extra $100 toward paying off your next credit card debt. Now you will be paying $225 a month on the $4,000 card and the $150 on the $5,000 card. With this accelerated payment on the $4,000 card, you will pay off the card earlier and save some money on interest charges. Repeat the same process to pay off the $5,000 card. To get a better understanding of how the process works, log onto the web and look for a “debt reduction calculator” that can help you organize your accounts and payments. Experts recommend liquidating the card with the highest interest first.

Simple Strategies:

Becoming debt free takes time, perseverance and patience, but once you rein in your credit card debt, you’ll feel relieved, you’ll be much better off financially, and you’ll feel more emotionally stable.

Here are some small steps you can begin taking right away that will really make a difference: Stop using credit cards except for the one that charges the lowest interest rate—and don’t use that credit card unless absolutely necessary. Canceling your credit cards may negatively impact your credit score, so lock them up but don’t cancel them.

Become familiar with the amount and terms of your debt. Gather all of your most recent credit card statements, sit down with a pencil and paper, and write down the balance of each debt and the interest rate you’re being charged.

Pay a little more than the minimum payment that is due each month. Did you know the minimum payment amount is usually 2 to 3% of your balance? When you pay more than is required each month, you’ll be surprised at how fast that credit card balance decreases.

Begin following Berkey’s process. On the card with the highest interest rate, pay the minimum payment plus any additional amount you can afford. Once this debt is paid off, begin paying off the card with the next highest interest rate debt, applying the money you were paying toward the first debt towards the second debt.

Making a commitment to becoming debt free will leave you feeling better about yourself and is an important step toward financial security. You can do it!

Is there a mountain—or problem—in your life obstructing you from accomplishing your goals? If so, have hope.

Is there a mountain—or problem—in your life obstructing you from accomplishing your goals? If so, have hope. As God’s child, you have the God-given right to be victorious in everything that you do.

Mountains are problems or barriers that stand in the way of your ability to completing God’s will or anything that slows you down or impedes your progress. And although God has given us the right to be victorious, the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. His goal is to obstruct our path—not so that we stumble but so that we fail indefinitely.

But there is hope. When we trust in God and the authority He has given us, He opens our eyes to see the blocks the enemy has placed in our path. When God opens our eyes to “see,” we can confidently command our mountain to move!

Jesus tells us specifically to speak to our mountains: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he says” [Mark 11:23, Matthew 21:21, Matthew 17:20, Luke 17:6]. God has given you authority to remove the mountains impeding your path and cast them into the sea.

Don’t focus on your mountain. Instead, focus on your God-given solution. Your mountain is not bigger than your God. Therefore, you shouldn’t focus on or be afraid of it. You empower the thing you focus on.

God wants you to succeed. Stand confidently and speak boldly. Cultivate your relationship with God and ask Him to guide you to the doors He has opened for you. Focus on the journey.

God’s word is full of His good promises. Once we understand what they are, we can confidently and boldly claim them.

If there is a mountain in your path, command it to move. Boldly speak to your mountain and know that God is on your side. If He is with you, there isn’t anyone or anything that can stand against you. Follow Him and His ways, and you will be victorious in everything that you do. Step into your destiny. God has a mighty plan for
your life!

Let Go [of everything this
world has taught you] and let
God [show you His ways].

At the height of bikini season, most women prefer to steer clear of conversations involving their so-called “imperfections.”

At the height of bikini season, most women prefer to steer clear of conversations involving their so-called “imperfections.” Among those imperfections, cellulite is a commonly shunned topic during the summer months. Although some see cellulite as a beauty flaw, most doctors consider it to be completely normal.

According to MayoClinic.com, at least 8 out of 10 women (and some men) show symptoms of cellulite. Therefore, it’s no wonder that each time we step near a cosmetics counter we’re bombarded with all the latest creams, gels, and lotions marketed to treat its effects. Salons, dermatologists, and wellness centers have also jumped in on the cellulite-curing bandwagon, offering services that involve lasers, radiofrequency, or even massage therapy to “remove” it.

Before buying every product you can find, however, it’s important to educate yourself to understand what cellulite really is and which treatments have been proven to be most effective.

So what is Cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by fat which accumulates between connective cords that attach skin to underlying muscles. As fat cells increase, they push up against the skin while the connective cords simultaneously pull down. This causes an uneven skin surface seen as dimpling, commonly referred to as cellulite. According to MayoClinic, “Cellulite is not a serious medical condition and treatment is not necessary. In fact, many doctors consider cellulite a normal occurrence. While it’s comforting to know that the condition isn’t harmful to our health, most of us still want to know how to remedy its effects.

Best Solution: Exercise & Weight Loss

Although there’s no absolute cure for cellulite, there are ways that we can mitigate its effects on the hips and thighs. Because cellulite is directly related to fat cells, it stands to reason that the most effective way to improve the appearance of cellulite is to adopt an exercise routine that will reduce fat cells–complemented by healthy eating habits.

Best Topical Remedy: Firming Cream

Many of the creams intended to decrease the appearance of cellulite do so by increasing blood flow to the area where it’s applied. Temporary firming of the skin can occur with several products while others take months to show significant results. One of the most respected products used by stars such as Victoria Beckham and Kylie Minogue is the Tonus B12. This cream is the only firming lotion proven to increase oxygen flow within the skin, creating pressure on fat cells and later breaking them up. The product has received recognition from Cosmopolitan, In Style, and others. For more information see: http://www.karinherzog.us/

Best Service: Zerona by Erchonia

Recently made available by Wardy Wellness Clinic in West El Paso, Zerona has been featured in Fitness RX, Women’s World, and on The Rachel Ray Show. The technology uses low-level lasers which, according to the creators, “has been shown to emulsify fat and allow it to move to interstitial space” (not in between the connective cords which form the appearance of cellulite). The result? A more even and smooth skin surface that remedies the effects of cellulite. For more information or a consultation, see http://www.wardywellnesschiro.com/.

What really counts

At the end of the day, while there is no “cure” for cellulite, there are a few things you can do to minimize its effects. Remember, too, that having confidence in your body image, or at least making peace with it, will do wonders for your self esteem when you’re in a summer skirt, a pair of shorts, or a bathing suit. When you’re able to relax and have a good time, people will be too busy enjoying your company to notice whether or not your thighs are as firm as they could be. Focus on what’s beautiful about yourself and others …chances are that everyone else will, too.

To keep your entire body strong, fit and fabulous, you must start with a strong core. The muscles that form your core are located in your back, pelvis, hip and abdomen. These are important areas for creating a strong foundation to start building your upper and lower body strength. When exercising outdoors, keep in mind that in the summer heat, you can quickly become dehydrated. Keep your skin protected and your body well hydrated.

The “Superwoman”

Begin in the prone position [on your belly], keeping arms and legs extended and straight.

Keeping your head up, slowly lift your arms and legs* until you begin to feel tightness in your back. Hold this position for two seconds.

Return to starting position and repeat 15 times.

Sitting on your rear, with arms and legs fully extended, slowly reach your fingers to your toes.*

If necessary, these moves can be modified by bending the knees.

Return to starting position and repeat 15 times.

*Do not flop your arms and legs. These moves must be performed slowly and with control in order to achieve the highest level of efficiency.

Have you ever looked at the clothes in your closet and felt that even though you owned at least two dozen outfits, you had nothing to wear? We’ve all felt that way at one time or another. Sometimes what you really need isn’t new clothes but a second chance at style. Believe it or not, a few additions to your current wardrobe and some professional tailoring separates you already own can make a world of difference in how you feel. And when you feel better, life’s better all the way around.

Stephanie Montero is an Occupational Therapist in El Paso. She came to us with a sincere request: “Please make me over!” A mother of two,

Stephanie is constantly on the go. After recently losing some weight, she’s realized that her body is looking better and better everyday. Now she’d like for her wardrobe to follow suit.

Many of us with more than one job need dual wardrobes to meet our needs. Since Stephanie works with children and also has professional meetings to attend, her wardrobe calls for items that are appropriate for both work and play. We found some great looks that she absolutely loves and that work just as hard for her as she does for others.

Here are some tips we shared with Stephanie that can work for you, too:

Look For Jeans In Dark Colors.

They’re comfortable enough to be worn every day and, if necessary, can be “dressed up” for professional situations and “dressed down” for work with kids.

Avoid All-over Prints.

For women that have a large bust, all-over prints draw attention where it’s least wanted. The better way to go is to find solid tops with smart necklines that flatter your bust and create a longer, sleeker silhouette.

Include Casual Blazers in Your Wardrobe. They great for going back and forth from office meetings to playdates. When you’ve got kids, jackets made of light fabrics with lots of pockets are essential. Whether it’s used to carry your Blackberry, iPod or just to keep you warm at the kid’s early morning soccer game, you’ll appreciate the blazer more than you could ever imagine!

Trousers Also Make A Great Staple.

Depending on the fabric, they can be comfortably worn at any time of year. The highwaist on trousers is intentional (unlike that of the “Mom Jean”) and flatters almost every body type.

For a different look, connsider tailored shorts topped with a nice jacket. They’re super fun and offer an alternative to the drab business suits that you’re tired of wearing. For the days when Stephanie is scheduled to work with her patients, we’ve gotten her into a pair of dark denim shorts and paired it with a tank top and a lightweight blazer.

Find A Good Tailor.

Stephanie described what she wore on a daily basis, and while most of the items sounded perfectly acceptable, my assumption was that these clothes didn’t fit her well. Many people can’t afford to go out and buy new clothes every time they shed some pounds. To keep your clothes fitting perfectly and protect the investment you made when purchasing them, find a good tailor to keep your pants, jackets and dresses in tip-top shape.

Don’t Fear the Unknown. Whether you’re afraid that a garment isn’t your style, won’t fit or just isn’t “you,” never be afraid to try something on. Stephanie had never worn a pair of Converse sneakers in her life. I suggested them to her as an alternative to her usual white running shoes, and she absolutely loved them! “I never would have picked these out for myself,” she said, “but they’re great. So comfortable–and my kids will get a kick out of them too!”

Accessorize!

A few simple jewelry and accessory changes (like belts and scarves) can transform your daytime outfit into the perfect ensemble for nighttime fun. Now when Stephanie gets a chance to meet her husband for dinner after work, she knows she can just make a few quick adjustments to her outfit and be ready to go!

Ultimately, Stephanie enjoyed her makeover results, and we were thrilled to have been able to help her out. We hope you can use some of these tips for some style upgrades of your own!

Here are some simple maintenance and replacement techniques so you know what to do if something goes wrong.

Proper Tire Maintenance

The Importance of Checking Air Pressure. Be sure to check the air pressure in all four tires, as well as your spare, at least once a month. Only 1-in-7 drivers do so, and lack of proper tire maintenance leads to loss of fuel efficiency and the chance of a blowout. It’s possible for a tire to lose up to one psi (pounds per square inch) per month.

Getting an Accurate Recommended
Tire Pressure. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will always indicate the recommended psi for your tires, including your spare.

The vehicle information placard inside the driver’s side door jamb will usually contain the suggested pressure as well.
In some vehicles the glove compartment door and the fuel hatch filler flap will also list the recommended pressures. So if the manual gets lost, there’s no need to panic.

BE CAREFUL not to go by the psi listed on the side of tires. This is the maximum inflation pressure the tire can hold and can often lead to damage once the air in the tire heats up and expands.

Gauge and Inflation Tips. Pressure gauges borrowed at gas stations are often abused and unreliable, so be sure to purchase your own quality pressure gauge from a reputable dealer. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or do some online research. Finding an accurate gauge is vital.

Always check your tires when they’re “cold.” The most accurate readings come before you’ve driven one mile or at least three hours after your car has been stopped.

Once an accurate reading has been rendered, open the valve on your tire and inflate to the desired psi, while constantly checking with your gauge. Remember that air does expand, so try to fill your tires before you do much driving.

When a Tire Goes Flat

Be Prepared. Before you ever have a flat, it’s important to ensure that you have the necessary tools in your trunk or back seat and to familiarize yourself with them. You’ll need a spare tire, the jack, and the tire iron. A flashlight will come in handy at night.

Be Safe. In the case of an emergency, pull as far away from traffic as possible and be sure to use your caution lights. Changing a tire while too close to the road can be extremely dangerous. If flares and reflectors are available, place them approximately 50 ft. behind your car.

Removing the Tire. With your tire iron, loosen the lug nuts of all four tires while the car is still on the ground. This allows you the necessary leverage to loosen the tightened nuts. Counterclockwise is the direction you want to turn in order to loosen the lug nuts. The common phrase “righty-tighty, lefty loosy” is applicable here.

Placing the Jack and Raising the Car. Be sure to find the proper jack point placement on your car. The owner’s manual will often indicate it, and often the jack and the body of the car will have matching arrows which can be lined up to help you get the automobile off the ground. Make sure the tire clears the ground by at least one or two inches before sliding it off the wheel and placing it in your car.

Placing the Spare. Once the flat tire has been removed, slide the spare into place. At this point, you can hand tighten all the lug nuts on the tire to put them into position. Then take your tire iron and tighten the lug nuts one at a time in a star pattern. This prevents the tire from over-tightening on one side and becoming wobbly. Once the lug nuts are firmly in place, you can lower the car and tighten one last time in a star pattern to ensure that the tire is firmly in place.

Keeping Your Windshield Clear

Maintaining Windshield Wiper Fluid. Open the hood of your car and look for a clear plastic container. The washer fluid reservoir is usually labeled with words or a spurting water icon. Don’t try to save money by filling the reservoir with a hose or tap water. Washer fluid is readily available and very inexpensive, and the formula keeps the windshield much cleaner than plain water.

This reservoir can be filled to the top using a funnel. Once refilled, close the hood and check the disbursement.

Replacing a Wiper Blade. After purchasing the correct replacement windshield wiper blades (buy the entire blade, not just the rubber blade insert) from an auto parts store, find the attachment that matches the wiper arm on your car.

Lift the wiper arm and remove the old blade. Attach the new blade in the same position as the one you just removed. Listen for a slight click. Once in place, give it a slight tug on the blade to ensure a secure fit. When you’re sure it’s secure, slowly lower the entire wiper arm onto the windshield.

Summer is a great time to jump in the car with family or friends for a spur-of-the-moment day trip or an adventurous weekend getaway. Now that we’ve helped take the mystery out of auto maintenance, you’re good to go!
