A woman’s closet is her castle—or at least a mini-version of it.

A woman’s closet is her castle—or at least a mini-version of it.

You entrust it to house and protect your most precious fashion pieces, glamorous shoes, and admired accessories. But lately, you can’t help feeling a sense of guilt when you walk by it and resort to just closing the door to avoid the inevitable: the decision to clean it out!

We’ve all experienced this, and the feeling can be overwhelming. Every closet needs order and balance because when you can easily find what you want to wear, you can maintain a peaceful mind. We stress ourselves out every morning before work or at night before we go out as we fling our stilettos and maybe a belt around, frantically trying to locate that one pair of leggings we know we put in a certain place (which we can’t quite recall). Confronted by the mess later on, we just resign to leaving it—possibly to grow larger as the weeks progress. As women, most of us have our own orderly disorder when it comes to our closets, but why not simplify? Here are some tips to help you de-clutter your closet:

Trimming your wardrobe down to the pieces you really like and wear is the first step. Go through your closet and identify any article of clothing or accessory that you haven’t worn in over a year and take it out. Donate these items to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, or think of a close friend or family member who is close to your size and will benefit from them. If you haven’t worn these pieces in over a year, there’s a good chance you won’t ever wear them again, and they’re only taking up space. Don’t hang onto things you hope to fit into in another year or two. Remember—trends change as often as the seasons.

Compartmentalize your closet. Separate your clothes into categories and designate each section: work attire, casual attire, evening/going out attire and exercise attire. When hanging them in their designated sections, start with camisoles/tank-tops, move to blouses/shirts/sweaters/cardigans, then shorts and skirts, onto pants/jeans, and finally dresses. To really simplify things, categorize these into smaller sections by color.

If you’re pressed for space in your closet, remove those items that you won’t be wearing this season and store them in large plastic containers so you can easily swap them out from spring/summer to fall/winter.

Don’t be overly sentimental about your shoes. If you haven’t worn them in a year, get rid of them. If you don’t wear them because you’ve worn the heels out or straps are broken, either have them repaired or toss them.

Are your shoes all over the floor? Invest in a resting or hanging shoe rack. These usually don’t cost more than $20 and can free up a lot of space in your closet. Categorize your shoes by seasons as well; that way they’re easier to sort through and choose from.

If you’re a hat and/or belt lover, a standing clothes hanger is a great gadget for your closet. Use the top hangers for hats and the lower hooks for hanging your belts. It helps to keep things off of the floor and in one place. The lower hooks are great for hanging scarves, as well.

Cleaning out your closet requires an investment of energy and time, but once you get it simplified and dedicate yourself to putting everything back in its designated space, the upkeep will be minimal, and so will your stress level. Hey, you may even want to reward yourself with a new pair of shoes since you know you’ll have room for them. Happy organizing!

Fashionistas are eagerly waiting until stores begin to carry select pieces couture designers have decided are “in” for fall 2010.

With military fashion, lingerie as outerwear, and leather clothing set to grace the racks of our favorite boutiques, we are left with the question of what colors to pair with them.

Unbeknownst to many, The Pantone Color Institute, a company known for their standardization of colors for the design industry, releases a seasonal “Fashion Color Report.”

The report offers a tool for designers to use in ordering materials and stays up to date with the latest couture and catwalk trends. This fall, the company’s website notes, “Designers continue to exhibit a degree of caution for fall 2010, yet offer a palette of beauty and excitement with a blending of colors, some with similar undertones, in surprising and intriguing combinations. Inspired by the ongoing phenomenon of film animation, vivid colors are often juxtaposed in inventive ways, creating arresting and extraordinary color combinations.”

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone, adds, “This season’s offerings include innovative takes on fundamental basics, as well as transporting, lively colors that conjure images of travel and adventure, whether real or inspirational.”

SVL sorted out the colors to add to your fall wardrobe, as suggested by the Pantone Color Institute.

Woodbine (Pantone 18-0538) A deep rich green such as woodbine is almost an homage to the colors that once were. As the leaves turn to rich red, yellow and orange, keep your wardrobe alive with the color of life. Look for this color in trendy military gear.

Purple Orchid (Pantone 18-3027) With its eye-catching appeal, Purple Orchid is a deep and sultry complement to the more neutral tones of fall. Look for a pair of statement heels in this color to make any outfit more than ordinary.

Rose Dust (Pantone 14-1307) – Much like the Pantone-provided sketch, a neutral, yet slightly girly take on the winter coat can add a touch of feminism to the cooler months. Also, look for this color in outerwear lingerie for a gentle take on a sexy statement.

Lipstick Red (Pantone 19-1764) A color so fabulous Queen Cleopatra was willing to wear crushed carmine beetles on her lips to acquire this lustrous tint. Wear this Marilyn Monroe shade with a statement backless dress.

Oyster Gray (Pantone 14-1107) Two great things about gray: 1) Anyone can wear it; and, 2) it matches with everything! Put this great accent color to use ASAP! Purchase a gray cami for a classy accent to a colorful tank.

Golden Glow (Pantone 15-1050) A rich gold is the perfect accent to a deep purple or navy blue. Pair this color with patterns or solids to complement any ultra-girly statement pieces.

Lagoon (Pantone 16-5418) This dark turquoise is the perfect complement to the usual monochromatic office wear. Pair a blouse this color with steel gray skirt or black leggings for a statement.

Endive (Pantone 13-0632) Perhaps seen as more of a summer tone, this unique take on lime green is in this fall. Top designers recommend wearing this color underneath fur coats for a hidden splash of color.

Living Coral (Pantone 16-1546) For a fresh take on your usual pinks this fall, opt for the beach inspired look of coral. Pair it with drab tones like browns, nudes, or off whites for a jolt of life.

Chocolate Truffle (Pantone 19-1526) The final color this fall, chocolate truffle. This season doesn’t call for brown boredom though. Pair this color with bright hues and statement accessories for a modern look.

“Trashin’ fashion” is a term for art, jewelry, fashion and objects created from used, thrown-out, found and repurposed elements.

How many of us think a torn sweater, an old pair of jeans, or a stained shirt should be thrown away? Many of us do. We often discard our clothing once it doesn’t look as new as we would want. Ultimately, our discarded clothing becomes part of city landfills and harmful waste. However, we can do something about it.

“Trashin’ fashion” is a term for art, jewelry, fashion and objects created from used, thrown-out, found and repurposed elements. You may find the idea of recycling clothes unattractive because of the lack of a recognized label. However, by recycling clothes, you’re creating your own fashion and also contributing to Earth’s preservation.

Many companies around the globe are already taking action by producing clothing lines made from recycled textiles. One such company, Patagonia, finds use for worn apparel by recycling the fabric. Here’s how they do it:

Recycled Sweater Hat

Did you accidentally shrink your old wool sweater in the washer? Don’t throw it away! Instead, make a winter hat!

To make the hat shown, first measure the head of the person for whom you’re making the hat. Second, make a pattern. To determine the width of your panels, divide the head circumference by 5, then add 1 inch for seam allowance (1/2 inch each side). Third, sew the seams. Pin two pieces together, with right sides facing, and sew along the long sides using 1/2-inch seam allowance. Start at the bottom edge, and stop 1/2 inch from the point at the top. Repeat to connect all the pieces.

Lastly, add a binding by pinning and sewing the binding around the bottom edge of the hat, folding the hat between the two layers of material. Now you have a stylish hat to wear next winter!

Denim Pocket Purses

Do you have an old pair of jeans you’re ready to toss? Instead, transform them into a new and funky denim purse.

You’ll need an old pair of jeans, lace, small silk flowers, ribbon, string of beads, and a hot glue gun.

Begin by removing the back pockets from the jeans. Place the pockets on top of each other, finished side out, and pin them together. Sew the outside edge of the pockets. On both sides, carefully glue lace around the pocket tops. Add ribbon and silk flowers. Lastly, glue the beads to the inside of the pockets to serve as the handle. Your purse is complete!

Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo. Every year, more and more little girls are groomed into women

Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo. Every year, more and more little girls are groomed into women with an insatiable appetite for sky-high designer heels, unforgettable pumps, gem-adorned flats, funky flip flops, and jaw-dropping boots. In today’s world, teenage girls are more likely to know the names of designers worn on Carrie Bradshaw’s feet than names of former Presidents.

Shoe addiction has long been known as an enemy of pocketbooks everywhere, but more often than not, women tend to forget about the effects that our varying shoe choices can have our bodies. Joint pain, ankle injuries, and other unsettling side effects can occur based on whether we opt for our favorite pair of peep toes or ballet flats. SVL looked into the effects and found some surprising health results to keep in mind.

High Heels

While it’s no secret that extensive wear of high heels can have varying consequences for the stylish one who dons them, most women aren’t familiar with what those exact consequences are. According to MayoClinic, “wearing heels causes your foot to slide forward redistributing your weight, creating unnatural pressure points and throwing your body’s natural alignment out of whack.” The medical reference website also notes that “high heels have been linked to overworked or injured leg muscles, osteoarthritis of the knee and low back pain.” As tempting as the tallest skinniest heel might be, it may be beneficial to follow the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons’ rule of thumb: no more than three hours in three-inch heels.

Flip Flops

It’s nearly impossible to discuss our favorite types of shoes during the summer season without mentioning flip flops. The classic choice for locker rooms and public showers has made its way onto the fashion scene with glitter, gems, stones, varying colors and styles. While many would assume that this flat shoe is preferable to your everyday heel, they may be overlooking certain factors. According to the Washington Post, “The repeated process of lifting your heel away from the shoe surface (creating that characteristic flip-flop sound) creates tension in the foot . . . which can worsen such painful inflammatory conditions as plantar fasciitis.” So during the summer, it’s probably a good idea to alternate your favorite flip flops with sandals, sneakers, or other shoes that offer a little more support.

Uggs

The winter time sheepskin comfort-shoe can be commonly mistaken as a fashion-do because of perceived comfort (F.Y.I. It’s still a don’t). While the skeletal system is relieved from the pressures of heels, the looseness of Uggs causes feet to slip around inside, increasing pressure on the arches that transcends to the hip. Dr. Rock Positano, Director of the Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Service for the Hospital for Special Surgery, sees Uggs as detrimental to the health of wearers. Positano cautions, “We’re dealing with footwear that offers no substantial and necessary orthopedic support for the foot and the ankle.”

Nike Shox

For the active woman, sporting a pair of Nike Shox can actually become detrimental to high performance. The elevated running shoe can have adverse effects on range of motion and be a prime contributor to shin splints when worn over a long period of time. Health and wellness expert Abby Jorgensen warns that “constant elevation of the heel also leads to lack of external rotation of the hip which in turn is why so many females let their knees fall inward when they are in a squat, lunge, or deadlift exercise and puts them at risk for tearing their ACL during sports movements.” Instead, opt for shoes with a flat or minimal heel for when heading to the gym.

Pointed Toe Shoes

This ever-so-common choice for the office comes with its own warning label. Placed on the “cruel shoes list” by the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society, shoes with pointed toes can cause crowding of your toes and increased pressure on the forefoot. This makes the idea of “breaking in” a pair of pointy-toe heels suddenly seem a little less desirable.

Comfort Shoes
Everyone needs a few “comfortable shoes” to knock around in. Experts recommend wearing comfort brands such as Naturalizer, Ecco, Aerosole, Cole Hahn, or Crocs. While most of us prefer brands with a little more panache for a night out on the town, the key is to be smart and practice moderation when it comes to not-so-friendly shoe choices. Limit the amount of time you wear them, vary between different styles and always ensure that you have the right fit. If you are a true believer in the “Beauty is Pain” ideology, just remember to walk with caution because an ankle brace just isn’t sexy.

Summer is here and the heat is reaching record-breaking highs. Yes, it’s very hot and you feel the urge to dress less formal for work. Don’t give in to the temptation. Your goal to getting dressed for work is to project a professional, competent image at all times. But, this doesn’t mean you have to wear suits all the time, either. Choosing the right fabric to wear is a Summer “must” for staying fresh. Also, knowing how to pair colors, textures, patterns, and accessories makes a world of difference. So, if you are looking for something to wear to your next business meeting or simply want to look “shnazy” for casual Friday, SVL has provided some fashionable wardrobes that are work appropriate for the Summer weather.

Classic

Reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s glamorous style, this gown is a modern classic. Clean lines, a great shape and a stunning brooch make this a timeless gown

Accessories – Ella Blu

Bold

For the daring bride, a dress with removable bottom instantly transforms from church-fancy to party-ready. The headpiece becomes an accessory on the dress for even more style.

One of the haute privileges we most value at Su Voz Latina, is our relationship with New York-based fashion consultant, Estefania Lacayo.

One of the haute privileges we most value at Su Voz Latina, is our relationship with New York-based fashion consultant, Estefania Lacayo. Each month, Lacayo suggests new brands and introduces us to up and coming names in fashion. Recently, Estefania gave design a go by creating an ultra chic line of fur vests featured in leadaing fashion sites like Vogue.com. The vests were made of Lacayo’s favorite skins such as white coyote, black raccoon and black fox. We spoke to Estefania about her Latin origin, favorite beauty products and effortless style secrets.

Su Voz Latina: How long have you been a fashion consultant?

Estefania Lacayo: Three years

SVL: Where were you born?

EL: Nicaragua.

SVL: Did you grow up there?

EL: I was born and raised in Nicaragua until I was 17 when I moved to Boston for college. I presently live in New York, NY.

SVL: How would you describe your style?

EL: Classic with a natural edge of modern and feminine. Bold and personalized accessories are always essential for me.

SVL: What is the best thing about your current position?

EL: Freedom!

SVL: Who are your style icons?

EL: My mother, who taught me to appreciate fashion, arts and the reasoning behind investing on a great tailored jacket versus something trendy I will only use one season. Her discipline in being so perfectly put together since early morning is admirable.

SVL: Who are a few of your favorite designers or collections for Spring/Summer 2010 and why?

EL: Bibhu Mohapatra for his great prints, Prabal Gurung for his attention to tailoring, Celine, [the collection] was refreshing and girly with a great British touch and Misela bags; I can’t wait to get a hold of [a] ‘Chiara at Barcelona’ bag.

SVL: What items do you splurge and skimp on?

EL: [I splurge on] beauty products and vintage shopping. [Skimp on] sports clothing and sneakers.

SVL: What are your five wardrobe staples?

EL: Cashmere cardigans by Prada, Rick Owens, and J. Crew; men’s stainless steel vintage Rolex; diamond studs; Balenciaga straight pants I’ve had forever; and t-shirts and tops from Yigal Azrouel.

SVL: What are five favorite items under $50 you can’t live without?

EL: Dior mascara, white Hanes t-shirts I discovered on a trip to El Paso, TX one Thanksgiving; Balance water for women, Tocca candles, and a South African Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (it’s such a refreshing bottle of white wine that only retails for $20!)

SVL: What are your favorite beauty or skin care products?

EL: This is such a hard one as I love spending on beauty products. Federic Fekkai hair products, La Mer face cream, Fresh body and face cream, and sugar scrub; Laura Mercier; Nars and Givenchy makeup. And of course, Narciso Rodriguez perfume I’ve been using since it came out.

SVL: What book is on your nightstand right now?

EL: “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm and “The Essential Kabbalah” by Daniel C. Matt and “La Isla Bajo el Mar” by Isabel Allende.

SVL: What’s playing on your MP3 player right now?

EL: Rihanna.

SVL: Your five favorite websites?

EL: WWD, Style.com, NYTimes, The Satorialist, and recently obsessed with Goop!
